Gaslighting is a type of emotional abuse that manipulates a person’s sense of reality and leads them to doubt their own perceptions, memories, and sanity. It can cause a loss of self-confidence, anxiety and depression, difficulty trusting others, physical symptoms, and isolation. If you or someone you know is experiencing gaslighting, seeking support, setting boundaries, documenting the abuse, and seeking professional help can be helpful. The first step in overcoming gaslighting is recognizing the signs of the abuse, such as questioning your memory, denying your feelings, blaming you for their behavior, and isolating you from friends and family. Trusting your instincts, keeping a record, setting boundaries, and taking action are crucial steps to regain control over your life.

This module explores the reasons why leaving a narcissistic partner can be difficult for the victim, even in the face of negative and abusive behaviors. Some effects of narcissistic abuse include mood swings, depersonalization, loss of sense of self and self-worth, and PTSD. Victims may experience anxiety, depression, short-term memory loss, headaches, body aches, and more. Some reasons why it can be hard to leave a narcissist include emotional manipulation, fear of repercussions, self-blame, trauma bonding, financial dependence, and isolation. Narcissists may also use financial control and abuse to keep their partners dependent on them. To leave a narcissist, victims may need to seek support, develop an exit plan, and prioritize their safety and well-being.

Healing meditation: Disconnecting from the abuser
The stages of healing from narcissistic abuse include feeling sorry for the abuser due to reasons such as trauma bonding, empathy and compassion, guilt and shame, and manipulation and gaslighting. When a victim starts to change and grow, it can lead to shifts in power dynamics, changes in communication styles, new interests and hobbies, changes in values and beliefs, and improved self-care and boundaries in the relationship. Leaving an abusive relationship hurts because the victim becomes dependent on the abuser to make them feel good about themselves, and they may struggle with denial, guilt, and bargaining. To heal, the victim needs to rediscover themselves and their boundaries, relearn their values, and find support and professional help.
